Great Moments from Olympics Past

If you were one of those people that spent every available moment (or even some available moments) wrapped up in Olympic fever, you might be feeling a little withdrawal at this stage in the week. While it's not London 2012, maybe these moments from past Olympic Games will ease your suffering.

My New Favorite Thing and A Way to be Awesome

I have recently been spending way too much time on youtube watching Vlogbrothers videos. I justify this by reminding myself that I'm not only being entertained, but I'm learning something at the same time.

So who are Vlogbrothers?

Hey look, more videos!

...I want an inflatable, helium filled fort now.

And now, for a way to be awesome.

Giving to charity not only helps people, it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Kiva is an interesting one. It's a Microfinance site wherein you give a small amount to a borrower who would otherwise not have access to a loan, and then they pay you (and the other people who gave them small amounts of money) back. Look, this video will explain it better.

I've known about Kiva for awhile, but never actually contributed because...well, I don't exactly have a reason. While there is some risk of not getting your money back, Kiva has a 98.97% repayment rate (to date). Those are pretty good odds. And although I don't have a lot of money, I can afford $25. But facts are facts, and I've never tried it.

HOWEVER, because of my new obsession with Vlogbrothers, I was able to try Kiva out for free. How excellent is that? What's even more excellent is that I can pass the awesome on: Sign up for Kiva using this link, and you too can give $25 to someone in need at no cost to you. Maybe this will inspire us to all give a little bit of our own money too.

Nomination Grand Pré

Grand Pré, NS has been submitted for nomination as a World Heritage Site to UNESCO. It has a rich history and is one of the many places in Nova Scotia that deserves to be shared with the world. It was featured in the videos I posted about Nova Scotia wines, and here are a few more videos about the wonders of Grand Pré.

...And, what the hell, another one about wine.

So, help spread the word: Grand Pré, Nova Scotia is a pretty incredible place and should be a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Things that are Awesome: Hilah Cooking

If you like cooking shows - which I do, I could watch them all day - and quirky girls that laugh at their own jokes, you will love Hilah Cooking. I found it in a quest to find a video on hot buttered rum (which I did end up trying and it was...ok. I mean, it wasn't terrible, but I would not making them again. If you're on the fence - skip it. You really aren't missing much). That video was my favorite so far, but I already have it in the hot buttered rum post, so I begrudgingly decided not to post it again. BUT! Check out these instead (and then click on the hot buttered rum link to watch that one).

Awesome, right? I told you so.

Do you have a favorite YouTube chef/cooking show? Let me know! I'll waste a good chunk of my day watching if you do.

Magic Video

The only way I know how to describe this video: Magical. Maybe a little whimsical, too.

Enjoy! Happy Wednesday!

Happy Friday!

Hey all, it's Friday! I've been having a bit of a down week...nothing major, it's just been kind of...meh. Ya know?

This morning though, I'm pushing the blahs away! It's Friday, and that rocks. Also, youtube recommended I watch this video:

Yes, that is a BOAT FULL OF BEAGLES!

Thanks YouTube, you made my morning sparkle a little!

Now, how about a drink? It's December and it's getting colder. We don't have much snow left, even though we had a storm that dumped 40 cm over night! The weather has been so weird. Anyway, snow or no snow, it's pretty chilly out. What a perfect time to try something I've always wanted to try even though I had no idea what's in it exactly - Hot Buttered Rum!

...Also, I love her dress, and the pirate thing made me laugh.

Have you ever had hot buttered rum? It looks easy enough, I don't know though...rum, water, spices sugar and butter...sounds strange.

Whtad'ya think?

How to Tie a Scarf...For Men!

Happy National Scarf Day! We are coming up on the end of it, but there is still time to get in on the fun!

Men...Scarves...I think this is a great combination. If you're a man, and you want to wear a scarf but just don't know how to make it look right: This (last) scarf day video is for you!

What could be simplier? Now, go put on a scarf. No excuses.

How to Tie a Boho Head Scarf

Hello again! It's been a pretty scarf-tastic day, hasn't it? Yes, I totally just wrote that. You've got your scarf on, right? It is National Scarf Day, after all.

So, maybe you're really not in to neck scarves. You can still participate in all the Scarf day fun! Check out these cute head scarf ideas:

These look really awesome, but I don't think I can pull them off myself. I'm just not Boho, ya know?

Do you wear head scarves?

Ways to Wear a Pashmina

Hello again! You've got your scarf on, right?

Do you have a Pashmina style scarf? I have one. I usually just wear it like a regular scarf though. Here is a video of how to wear it with your evening wear. Pretty basic stuff, but some of us need that from time to time. Or in my case pretty much all the time.

Hey, how about sharing some scarf day resources of your own in the comments? I'd love to see it.

7 Ways to Wear a Scarf

Hello my (hopefully!) scarf wearing friends! Welcome to the second post of (possibly self proclaimed) National Scarf Day! Need more scarf ideas? You've come to the right place.

Some of these are pretty similar to the ones in 25 Ways to Wear a Scarf (Companion videos here!), so be sure to check those out as well!

Rainbow shots, you say? Yes, these are pretty incredible and if you make them it will be sure to wow and amaze.

 Lets look a another video.

I KNOW! I told you - incredible, right?

Ok, one more.

Ok, how to time.

Ok, this one is a little less annoying.

Now you're ready to make some rainbow shots!

Is it scarf weather where you are? Got any scarf wearing tips for me?

Part of our Heritage

Heritage Minutes - better known as those part of our heritage commercials, are short films detailing parts of Canadian History. I got thinking about them when I posted the Flander's Fields one on Remembrance Day. This short blurb makes it sound like they still play them on Canadian tv, but I can't remember the last time I saw one. None the less, they are a huge memory generator, and they're pretty awesome. Here are some of my favorites.

How Canada Got it's Name

Superman

The Underground Railroad

Winnie the Pooh

Free Heath Care

Basketball

Irish Orphans

Women in Medicine

Dr. Wilder Penfield
(this one is a bit quite, you may have to crank your speakers)

Mona Parsons

I could do this all day. I better quit now before I get too carried away. All you Canadians out there: What's your favorite Heritage Minute?

Videos

It's Saturday! Happy weekend to all! To ease into this weekend morning, I'm offering to you some videos that I found interesting. One really has nothing to do with the next. Anyway, enjoy!

I never really thought about it, but that's probably totally true. That's probably why people sometimes don't like movies that were made from books.

It was only a small pitcher, but still - impressive.

Oh my god, he's Happy Gilmore, but without the swearing and punching and hockey. And Canadian. Very cool.

I liked this. That's all I have to say on that matter.

Kinda creepy. That voice. Kinda Awesome too though.

Great idea, as long as the egg is for you. Other people may be appreciate you blowing on their food. Just saying.

Ok, that's just crazy. Crazy AWESOME!

"I'm an old man, so you can trust what I say." Too funny. I love this.

And finally, some kittens playing with an easter egg. Can't top that. I guess we're done.

Enjoy your Saturday!
